Mango Upside-Down Cake

Two girls, my sister Sharda and I, nine and ten years old, ignore the dead fly cemetery and grab the mangoes first, each cheek held up to the mouth, teeth sunk into the golden flesh, yellow creamy juice slipping down the corner of a mouth and running in a crooked egg-yellow rivulet down the finger, down the palm, down the arm to drip off the elbow.
~ “The Upside-downness of the World as it Unfolds” from Out on Main Street by Shani Mootoo.

Tip: I used honey instead of brown sugar.
